A Peacock

A Peacock

In many ancient images and books, peacocks are depicted as royal protectors, often seen sitting near or next to a throne. They’re an incredible species of bird, with iridescent colours. They walk with an air of regal importance.

I wanted to paint a peacock that symbolises new beginnings, protection, compassion, love and kindness. He presents a new way forward, sitting perched and looking out into an unknown but exciting life.

Two golden spinebills flutter around him, reminding him to see the joy in life.

There’s an important lesson to be learnt from this painting. When we nurture the weeds in our garden, that’s all we will ever grow. But if we nurture the budding flowers trying to emerge, we will have a garden rich in colour.

The peacock is surrounded by butterflies, which in my work is a symbol of new beginnings and metamorphosis. Butterflies sit tucked away in their dark, velvet cocoons, unsure of what they will become – they’re masters in patience.

There are also grasshoppers in this painting, which represent change and moving forward. Change can come in many forms and is sometimes forced upon us. These grasshoppers give us hope, reminding us when unexpected change happens, we can embrace it with courage.
