Just as I was about to sketch this piece onto the canvas, an incredible light hit my studio and cast an angel-like presence over the canvas. It was extraordinary. Luckily, I took a photo, which you can see in the gallery at the end of this book.
When I see things like this I don’t question it, I just consider it a confirmation of my ideas; a sign that I’m on the right path.
On many occasions, I’ve experienced an unexplainable feeling of divine intervention while painting. I trust that I’m the person who was picked to paint these images. I didn’t have much of a technical education in painting – I studied drawing and clay. So instead, I act on pure feeling.
I’m not a religious person, however I do believe there is an enigmatic energy far greater than us, which helps us along the way; a spirituality of sorts, presenting itself in many forms. I believe having a connection to nature helps bring us closer to that energy.
My sister asked me to paint this piece, Together Forever, for her daughter as a special surprise wedding gift. It shows a beautiful girl embracing the love of her life, as they look out at a butterfly.
They’re surrounded by different creatures.
Kookaburras symbolise the family members they share strong bonds with, and their grandparents who have passed and left stories to cherish. One kookaburra is helping place blossoms in her hair, to help her grow and be strong. This kookaburra represents her mother, who loves her unconditionally and will always be there to support her.
Turtles remind this couple to be grateful for one another and everything they have.
The butterflies represent new beginnings and are a vibrant reminder that life can develop into so many amazing colours as they share and build their lives together.
