I was invited to paint a piece depicting a profound experience shared by a local family, one they believed I could bring to life through my work. I wasn’t so sure I could pull this one off. Capturing someone else’s experience is tricky. But I relied on my instincts, aiming to translate the beauty they had witnessed and the energy felt from these magnificent creatures.
Having never encountered whale sharks before, I had to do some research. What I discovered about them was nothing short of incredible, and I was instantly captivated by their beauty. I could see why so many people describe their encounters with them as almost spiritual, these gentle giants of the sea are truly exquisite.
In many cultures, whale sharks are seen as symbols of peace, good fortune, and prosperity. Their gentle nature has even been likened to kind-hearted grandmother spirits, gracefully swimming through the ocean.
I felt this piece needed companions to accompany them. Fish and turtles drawn to the whale sharks’ calm, nurturing energy, representing family and connection.
One of the most fascinating things I learned is that each whale shark has a unique pattern of spots – like a fingerprint, no two are the same. In Madagascar, they are called "many stars," linking them to the night sky.
With that in mind, I created a sparkling pathway of stars, weaving its magic around them and highlighting their celestial markings.
The whale sharks remind us to embrace our differences, for there is power and strength in gentleness. Shine a light on compassion and empathy, and help others swim with you – not against you.
