One day, an art lover walked into my studio and asked me if I had ever heard of an ancient Chinese painting called 100 Birds. She said my work had a strong sense of spirituality, similar to the 100 Birds. I hadn’t heard of the painting before but was instantly curious.
The original painting is a story of luck, prosperity, freedom, flight, love, passion, kindness, strength and beauty. It’s a watercolour and ink painting that Chinese people use to encourage new beginnings, prosperity and abundance.
In Chinese culture, birds are a strong symbol of luck and each colour has meaning – I resonated with this completely, as my paintings have the same connection to nature and colour.
This painting is my modern version of the Chinese philosophy. It shows 100 birds, all different species, including some Australian natives that I see in my garden every day. The birds are flying in one direction into your home. They allow new beginnings and help old, unwanted things to leave.
The deep crimson of the rosella is nothing short of magnificent. Its beauty flashes across the green landscape of our native bushland, singing out: ‘Let’s get things done’. To me, they are an inspiring creature representing diligence and self-motivation.
Here’s some of the other birds I included in the piece.
Kookaburras bring a sense of family back into your life that you may be missing; they will help you reconnect and bond with the people you love.
Doves are a peaceful bird. If life has been overwhelming or muddy, a dove will bring clarity and peace into your life with their pure white feathers and gentle nature.
Golden Spinebills and Hummingbirds are honeyeaters, they enjoy the nectar found in flowers and encourage us to taste the nectar of life.
Peacocks are protectors of royalty. These birds will remind you how important you are and to not doubt the qualities you bring to this world. They will protect you because you are worthy of protection.
Magpies are beautiful, singing birds that seize opportunities. They will help you see new possibilities in your life and encourage you to go after them.
Cranes and big water birds are known to be messengers. They bring gifts and will help you discover your full potential.
There is a family of black swans flying with dignity, grace and strength. They fly in to remind you to be gentle with yourself and never doubt your strength.
Finally, the beautiful pink, raucous Galahs fly in with joy and laughter. These birds are your mates, they will sing, chat, talk, squawk and have fun with you.
I loved painting 100 birds. It took me about two and a half months to create and I hope these birds have made a huge impact on their owner.
