Woman and Child

Woman and Child

If I had to choose one painting that represented how I feel about my three children, this would be it. An embrace of unconditional love.

My children are a lot older than depicted in this painting, but nevertheless, I felt compelled to paint this. Inspiration comes in many forms. This painting was inspired by a big move I went through with my family, the memories we’ve made so far, and feeling reminiscent of days gone by. So, this monochromatic piece with deep reds and crimsons was created.

However, this painting represents a lot of different relationships, not just that of a mother and child. It could be an aunty, guardian, grandmother, friend or even your own inner child. It’s about loving another human being for who they are.

Woman with Child features butterflies, hummingbirds, flying fish and turtles. Each one of these creatures symbolises different parts to their story.

I chose the hummingbird for its infinity, balance and magic. Hummingbirds are closely connected to the number 8 – they flutter their wings 80 times per second in a figure 8 motion. This little bird is an incredibly special part of nature. It not only teaches us about joy and tasting the nectar of life, but also finding balance in all aspects of life; materially, spiritually and emotionally.

There are 11 hummingbirds in this painting, a number I randomly saw a lot while working on it. Every time I looked at my phone, or car clock, it would always be 11-something. I did some research and found out 11 is a significant number – seeing it often is a reminder to reflect internally and believe in your strengths. Some people call it the angel number.

So, these little hummingbirds pack a powerful message in this painting.

The butterflies represent growth as the mother and child change over the course of their lives. They’re building a strong foundation of unconditional love and support. They’re wrapped in a golden blanket embellished with flying fish and turtles, as a metaphor for being wrapped in gratitude and emotional connection.
