When I started this painting in late October 2019, I knew it would be a special one to finish the year. A piece filled with colour and under-the-sea magic, much-needed joy after a challenging year.
However, I didn’t realise just how profound the story behind this painting would become as we moved into 2020.
Emerging from the depths of the ocean and taking a breath beneath a golden sky is a whale and a mermaid. Not far behind, a family of turtles sparkles their magic across the water.
Turtles, as you may know, are a symbol of gratitude. They move with the rhythm of the sea, cruising the currents with grace. Their message is simple: pause, appreciate, and recognise the beauty of what’s right in front of you.
With 2020 in mind, appreciating what we have right now, rather than always seeking more, is essential to helping our country and planet thrive. By keeping things simple, returning to growth, and supporting our communities and neighbours, we can find happiness once again amid the chaos.
The mermaid, a mythical creature, has always fascinated me. One of the reasons I paint them is because I can’t help but think of them as angels of Mother Nature – guiding and supporting all those in need.
Rising to the surface alongside her family of turtles and one of the ocean’s oldest and wisest creatures, the whale, they work together to witness what’s unfolding above. There is hope when we come together as a collective.
Basking in a golden glow. A warm light that breathes life into the world.
