In Angels and Turtles, I wanted to show my three children how to flourish in life.
This piece tells the story of a family and their adventures together. Family life isn’t always smooth sailing—there will always be rough seas—but if you can ride the waves together, you will always find your way to calmer waters and understanding.
A mother sits in a warm and gentle embrace with her children as the sun sets around them. She loves that they are all together on the wild seas. Her wings are not visible, but that doesn’t mean she cannot fly. Instead, they symbolise strength, stability, and being grounded—protecting her loved ones while encouraging them to take flight when the time is right.
Two girls and one boy have their wings. They have so much to explore, experience, and learn. Life has many lessons to teach them, but for now, they are simply enjoying the adventure of being together.
Turtles appear as a symbol of gratitude and appreciation. They move effortlessly with the rhythm of the sea, reminding this family to be grateful. If they can embrace gratitude, they will find happiness.
Butterflies in this painting reflect the constant changes in life, showing that their wings will grow when they need them. A butterfly’s lifespan is short, but beautiful. They remind us to embrace every moment and to pursue the dreams we have always wanted to achieve.
Black cockatoos fly overhead, guiding the family on their journey and teaching them mindfulness. Classified as water birds, they are known for singing about the rain. Ancient stories speak of their healing magic and cleansing powers, conveying messages of hope and clarity. In this piece, they guide the family across the sea, keeping a watchful eye over them and singing their wisdom: "Look around, walk in the rain, and find your joy." These birds share their special magic only with those who are willing to listen.
Grasshoppers leap energetically across the canvas, representing the courage to move forward and learn from past mistakes. Mistakes shape who we are. Those who love us will forgive, and those who don’t—it’s okay, they simply never truly knew us.
Shooting stars symbolise the light they shine, encouraging the children to be a beacon for those in need and to always be kind. A shooting star lasts only a split second, but the memory of its beauty can last a lifetime. Hold onto the memories of where you’ve come from and those you’ve yet to make.
Flying fish remind them to hold on tightly to their passions and never let them go. Feel deeply, love fiercely, and dive to the greatest depths to find yourself.
Two royal gold eagles soar overhead, guiding them with wisdom and knowledge. I can’t help but imagine these birds as grandparents watching over their family. Majestic and powerful, eagles spiral upwards as they fly, offering a different perspective. They remind us to rise above and not sweat the small stuff.
An abundance of blossoming flowers and love hearts emerge from the children—symbols of the ideas and magic they bring to the world.
Finally, two little wrens, a male and a female, represent balance and the importance of keeping an open mind. Life will present many challenges and countless opportunities for discovery. But with an open mind and a forgiving heart, they can overcome anything.
